With national gas prices hitting $4.14 per gallon and Los Angeles County seeing $5.90-plus at many stations, Costco is doubling down on its fuel strategy with a bold new approach. The retailer’s first standalone gas station—a 40-pump discount fuel oasis without an attached warehouse—opens in Mission Viejo this June, promising the same member-exclusive savings that have made Costco gas stations a cult phenomenon since 1995.
California Pilot Paves Way for Hawaii Expansion
Two confirmed locations test appetite for warehouse-free fuel sites.
The 17,000-square-foot Mission Viejo site at 25732 El Paseo replaces a former Bed Bath & Beyond, operating 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with membership validation required at pumps. Costco isn’t stopping there—construction began last October on a massive 240-pump facility in Honolulu’s Iwilei area, set for 2027 completion.
That Hawaiian location sits about a mile from the world’s busiest Costco warehouse, which already operates its own gas station. The strategy strips away everything except the core value proposition: Top Tier certified fuel at 10-45 cents below local averages.
No convenience store, no hot dog combo deals—just high-volume, fast-turnover fuel designed to reduce warehouse parking lot congestion while maintaining the membership hook that drives Costco’s business model.
Numbers Reveal Fuel’s Strategic Importance
Gas sales comprise 10% of total revenue across 750+ global locations.
“When prices are higher, that will tend to cause members to maybe take the extra mile because of the incremental value,” CFO Gary Millerchip explained during Q2 2026 earnings, noting their competitive spread now averages 30 cents per gallon.
With fuel contributing 10% of Costco’s net sales across more than 750 global gas stations, these standalone sites could pressure competitors like Circle K, Chevron, and BP who can’t match warehouse club pricing power.
Success in Mission Viejo and Honolulu could reshape how Americans think about fuel stops—transforming gas runs from necessity into membership recruitment tools that happen to sell premium fuel at discount prices.
