A senior executive slides into the back seat, the car merges into downtown traffic, and nobody looks twice. No reinforced wheel arches. No tell-tale bulk around the doors. That invisibility is the entire product. BMW’s Concept 7 Protection, developed under the new BayB standard, is designed to shield occupants from selected handgun ammunition — specifically 9×19 mm and .44 Magnum rounds — while retaining the appearance of a standard 7 Series. It is aimed at private buyers, executives, and corporate customers who face genuine but defined threats and would rather not advertise the fact.

Armor You Can Actually Live With
Most armored vehicles announce themselves the moment they round the corner; this one is engineered to do the opposite.
Bullet-resistant glazing, ballistic steel and fiber-reinforced composite materials are integrated into the doors and passenger cell, according to BMW press materials. Armor also runs beneath the panoramic roof, with the sunblind remaining permanently closed to conceal the structure beneath it. An intercom system and attack alarm give occupants tools to communicate externally and respond to an emerging situation. None of this protection is apparent from the outside — and by BMW’s own design logic, that concealment is the point.
Key specs, per BMW:
- Protection: BayB standard; covers selected handgun rounds including 9×19 mm and .44 Magnum. BMW specifies protection for defined handgun attack scenarios; higher-protection vehicles are positioned for blast and more severe ballistic threats
- Powertrain: M760e xDrive plug-in hybrid — 3.0-liter inline-six plus electric motor via eight-speed Steptronic transmission, all-wheel drive, 612 hp combined output, 800 Nm torque
- Security features: Bullet-resistant glazing, ballistic steel, fiber-reinforced composite armor, attack alarm, intercom system
- Interior: BMW Individual Smoke White Merino leather, M Anthracite Alcantara headliner, digital rear-view mirror, fold-down rear console with table and cool box — planned for broader 7 Series availability in the second half of 2027
- Status: Concept vehicle; no confirmed production price; European markets identified as likely initial focus

More Bodyguard Than Battle Tank
The protection ceiling here is clearly defined, and BMW’s own language draws the line without apology.
This vehicle sits explicitly below the 7 Series Protection and X5 Protection VR6 in BMW’s lineup — models designed for substantially more severe ballistic threats. BMW specifies that blast protection requires a higher protection class; anyone whose threat profile extends into that territory should look to those vehicles rather than this one. The Concept 7 Protection is designed for defined handgun scenarios, and it should only ever be evaluated on that basis.
For the right customer, the calibration makes considerable sense. Where the concern is opportunistic handgun attacks or unpredictable public situations — rather than coordinated, heavily armed threats — this concept is designed to be proportionate. The trade-off is explicit: occupants gain the ability to move through a city without projecting a security profile, paired with 612 hp, Merino leather, and armor that complies with the BayB standard.
BMW describes the vehicle as protecting against “selected handgun ammunition” under BayB — language that defines both the promise and its limits. That precision is worth holding onto, because it separates a genuinely useful security tool from an overstated one.
The Concept 7 Protection’s most consequential feature may be the one that requires no explanation at a traffic light: it looks like nothing special. In environments where visibility invites risk, blending in is its own form of armor.
