Ford Global Technologies was granted U.S. Patent No. 12,728,722 B2 on September 8, 2026, for a system that turns the pop-up grab handle on an F-series tailgate step into a low-speed motion controller. The application was filed June 23, 2023. No production announcement has been made — this is a patent, not a product.

Push Harder, Move Further

The mechanics are straightforward. That familiar grab handle conceals a pressure sensor. Push it, and a signal travels to a controller, which commands torque from the powertrain. The truck moves in short, discrete pulses — harder pushes produce longer or more frequent nudges. Release the handle and motion stops immediately. The system works in both forward and reverse, with parking sensors and driver-assist technology described in the patent to monitor obstacles at either end of the vehicle.
Safety logic is woven into the concept from the start. Here is what the patent actually describes:

A Patent Isn’t a Promise
Ford’s worksite nudge system fits a broader shift toward external vehicle control — but remains firmly on paper for now.
This concept sits within a recognizable automotive trend: moving vehicle control outside the cabin. Key-fob remote parking and smartphone self-parking apps already let drivers stand clear while a car finds its spot. Ford’s version is slower, dirtier, and far more specific — worksite micropositioning, not valet tech.
Car and Driver notes that the tailgate pole could reportedly extend into joystick territory for slow field maneuvering or trailer hitching, though those remain speculative directions rather than stated plans. Ford already offers Pro Trailer Backup Assist, an in-cab system designed to help drivers maneuver with a trailer attached, so any external steering expansion would represent a meaningful step beyond the current patent’s scope.
Ford has secured the legal rights to the idea. Whether it reaches an actual F-150 is another matter entirely. For the landscapers, contractors, and grounds crews who spend their days repositioning trucks one shovelful at a time, that question carries more weight than any press release. The most useful truck innovations rarely feature in Super Bowl ads — and if this one ever does reach production, the tradespeople will recognize its value long before the automotive press catches on.
