Ford just became the first automaker to charge separately for front trunk space. The 2026 Mustang Mach-E configurator now lists the frunk as a $495 “Exterior Option,” ending five years of standard inclusion since the electric crossover’s 2021 launch.
This isn’t corporate greed disguised as innovation—it’s data analysis. Ford discovered something uncomfortable: most buyers weren’t actually using that front storage compartment they assumed everyone wanted.
From Standard Feature to Premium Add-On
The frunk appeared standard on every Mach-E since launch, initially offering 4.7 cubic feet with a drain plug for ice. Ford shrunk it roughly 50% in 2024 to accommodate heat pump hardware, leaving about 2.5 cubic feet—still larger than rivals like the Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5.
“Drivers were not using the frunk as much as they had expected,” explained Teddy Ankeny, Mustang Mach-E brand manager. Ford’s planning team analyzed customer behavior and concluded that most owners ignored the space entirely.
Surprisingly, the move coincides with lower base prices. The 2026 Mach-E GT starts at $53,395—down $1,000 from before. The entry-level Select RWD lands at $37,795.
Industry-First Fee Signals Broader Trend
Ford stands alone in monetizing frunk access, though Dodge bundles its Charger EV’s 1.5-cubic-foot front storage into a $5,000 R/T package. Most successful EVs—including the Chevy Equinox EV, VW ID.4, and Polestar 2—offer no meaningful front storage yet sell well.
The data suggests frunks rank low on actual buyer priorities compared to range, charging speed, and price. Ford’s decision reflects EV market maturation—automakers now optimize around verified usage patterns rather than theoretical benefits.
This pricing strategy mirrors broader automotive feature monetization, from BMW’s heated seat subscriptions to Tesla’s software-locked capabilities. The question for buyers: Do you actually need 2.5 cubic feet of weatherproof front storage, or would you rather pocket the $495?
For most drivers, the honest answer determines whether Ford’s gamble pays off.
