AMG’s going electric with a proper SUV. Finally.
Mercedes-AMG has teased a full-size high-performance SUV that’s being designed and engineered entirely in-house at Affalterbach. This marks a first in AMG’s 57-year history – a ground-up electric SUV that doesn’t just wear an AMG badge as an afterthought.
The silhouette looks suspiciously Bentley Bentayga-esque. Make of that what you will.
AMG’s Electric Muscle Machine
This beast will ride on the AMG.EA all-electric platform, which already underpins the upcoming AMG electric GT 4-door coupe.
The drivetrain uses axial-flux motor technology from Mercedes-owned Yasa. Not just marketing fluff – these motors deliver four times more torque and double the power of typical EV motors. Physics, not promises.
Prototype testing begins this winter after summer test drives. When it hits showrooms, expect a price tag north of the current AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC’s $130,800 starting point.
AMG’s Current SUV Arsenal
Mercedes-AMG already fields a squadron of high-performance SUVs:
- AMG GLE 63 S: Handcrafted biturbo V8 with hybrid assist
- AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE: 671-hp plug-in hybrid with 2.0L turbo-four and rear electric motor
- AMG GLC 43: 416-hp 2.0L inline-4 turbo with hybrid assist
The GLS63 remains the current flagship, packing a twin-turbo 4.0L V8 producing 603 hp and hitting 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. Not bad for something shaped like a luxury apartment building.
The Sixth Pure-AMG Creation
This electric SUV represents only the sixth vehicle fully developed by AMG, joining the GT, SL, and legendary SLS.
It’s not just another Mercedes with AMG badges. The Affalterbach team engineered this from the ground up.
The result? A purpose-built electric performance SUV that should deliver proper AMG dynamics rather than just straight-line speed. At least that’s the promise.
Winter testing will reveal whether this electric behemoth can deliver the visceral thrills AMG buyers expect – just without the thunderous V8 soundtrack we’ve grown to love.
