911 GT3 RS: Fast, But Not Fast Enough for Top Gear Glory
The latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS has set a lap time of 1:14.8 around the Top Gear test track.
Fast? Absolutely. Record-breaking? Not even close.
The track-focused 992-generation GT3 RS lands in a somewhat disappointing 18th position on the Power Lap leaderboard, sandwiched between the BAC Mono and the Ariel Atom V8.
Respectable Company, Respectable Time
Porsche's most track-focused 911 variant outpaced the McLaren 600LT (1:15.1) but couldn't match the 675LT's blistering pace.
For a car with Porsche's motorsport pedigree and a $223,800 starting price, 18th place feels underwhelming.
The numbers don't lie. The GT3 RS brings serious hardware:
- 518 hp from its naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six
- 343 lb-ft of torque
- 7-speed PDK transmission sending power to the rear wheels
- 0-62 mph in just 3.2 seconds
- 184 mph top speed
Nürburgring Hero, Top Gear Mortal
The GT3 RS dominates the Nürburgring with a staggering 6:49.328 lap time—over 10 seconds quicker than the standard GT3.
But Dunsfold Aerodrome's tight technical layout exposes different limitations.
Massive aero packages that generate 860 kg of downforce at 177 mph mean little on Top Gear's short straights. The car's strengths simply don't align with the track's characteristics.
Evolution of Speed
The new GT3 RS shows significant improvement over its predecessor. The 997-generation GT3 RS managed only 1:21.0 on the same circuit.
That's a 6.2-second improvement over a decade and a half. Engineering progress in action.
But while Porsche engineers were perfecting the GT3 RS formula, other manufacturers were building even more extreme machines. Hypercars and ultra-lightweight track weapons now dominate the leaderboard's upper echelons.
Porsche's ultimate 911 remains a formidable machine. But on Top Gear's test track, eighteen other cars have proven faster.
Sometimes even German engineering precision meets its match.
