Honda’s current Type R is already a beast. Now they’re plotting something wilder.
Honda Racing President Koji Watanabe confirmed at the Rolex 24 what enthusiasts have been begging for – a new ultra-performance trim positioned above the already potent Type R and Type S models.
Racing DNA for the Street
Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) has begun developing performance parts specifically for North American models. These aren’t just fancy badges and red accents – we’re talking legitimate race-derived components that could transform street-legal Hondas into something far more savage.
The plan isn’t to build hypercars or pure race vehicles. These new models will be based on existing Honda and Acura platforms, but injected with HRC’s racing expertise.
Think of it as Honda’s answer to Ferrari’s XX program, but without the seven-figure price tag and country club membership requirement.
Beyond the Type R
The current Civic Type R already impresses with:
- 315 horsepower from its turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder
- Nürburgring front-wheel-drive lap record of 7:44.881
- Track-focused suspension and braking systems
- Starting price of $47,045
But Honda clearly thinks there’s room to push further. The regulatory hurdles remain substantial – emissions, safety certifications, and homologation requirements will determine which race-bred components make it to production.
The Performance Hierarchy
Honda’s performance strategy now appears three-tiered. The standard sporty trims sit at the base. Type R and Type S models occupy the middle. And soon, these new HRC-infused beasts will claim the summit.
The timing couldn’t be better. While Honda expands its hybrid offerings across the Civic and Accord lines, this ultra-performance initiative reaffirms their commitment to driving enthusiasts.
Watanabe remained tight-lipped on specifics, but the development is already underway. The question isn’t if these models will arrive, but when – and how much track capability Honda can legally inject into a street car.
For those who found the Type R too tame (all twelve of you), your prayers have been answered.
