GM’s outgoing 6.6-liter Duramax manages 470 hp and 975 lb-ft — and GM just lobbed a grenade into all of it. The all-new 8.3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8, officially nicknamed “Mongoose,” is confirmed to power the 2027 Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, with the current 6.6-liter Duramax expected to be supplanted as the flagship diesel option.
The Teaser Is the Message
What GM chose to show instead of specs says everything about where this engine is aimed.
If you’re a fleet manager or contractor who watched GM’s September 21 announcement drop, you saw something unusual for a corporate powertrain reveal: a mongoose with a Chevrolet bow-tie motif hunting and killing a scorpion walking in an oval. Ford’s internal codename for its Power Stroke diesel is, in fact, “Scorpion.” According to reporting from Car and Driver and Carscoops, GM was abundantly clear about the target. The engine carries the internal code L6P, sits within the Duramax family architecture, and represents a roughly 26% jump in displacement — making it, according to multiple outlets, the largest diesel offered in any Big Three HD pickup. GM’s September 21 release offered one official performance claim before figures were withheld:

Diesel’s Defiant Bet
In an industry racing toward electrification, GM is doubling down on displacement where it matters most to working truck buyers.
Every other segment is sprinting toward EVs, yet GM just committed to the largest-displacement diesel in HD pickup history. That’s not accidental. Contractors, farmers, and RV haulers towing through rural Montana aren’t prioritizing charging infrastructure that doesn’t yet exist — they need sustained power under load and a five-minute refuel. CarBuzz notes that a proportional output increase could theoretically place the Mongoose near 588 hp and 1,218 lb-ft, but those figures are explicitly displacement-based calculations, not confirmed GM data. Emissions certification details remain unaddressed by GM at this stage.
Full specs, towing figures, and certification data are expected closer to the 2027 launch. That’s when the Mongoose either earns its name or becomes the most expensive piece of marketing theater Detroit has produced in years.
