11 Group S Rally Cars That Never Raced

The 1986 Group B ban slammed the brakes on rally motorsport’s most extreme era. This sudden halt also erased Group S, a conceptual category that promised machines pushing engineering past any sensible limit, making today’s hypercars seem pedestrian. What follows are cars built from cutting-edge composites, boasting engines with over 600 hp that redefined powertrain innovation. These prototypes, from dual-engine oddities to carbon-fiber dreams, were rally’s equivalent of finding a stack of unheard demos from a band that broke up too soon. Explore these extraordinary machines and glimpse the unbridled peak of automotive development that never saw daylight on a competitive stage.

1. Lancia ECV / ECV2

When Lancia threw conventional construction out the workshop door, they created a 930-kg machine that made hypercar engineers take notes.

At a mere 930 kg (around 2,050 pounds), the Lancia ECV showed precisely what radical engineering could achieve. This experimental composite vehicle reached its featherweight stature through a monocoque chassis blending carbon fiber, Kevlar, and aluminium honeycomb. Power came from a mid-mounted Abarth 233 ATR 18S 1759 cc four-cylinder engine, force-fed by twin turbochargers.

The innovative Triflux crossflow cylinder-head design delivered around 600 hp at 8000 rpm. Thermal management required extraordinary engineering precision to tame that output. Despite being unveiled at the Bologna Motor Show in December 1986, the ECV and its refined ECV2 successor never saw Group S competition due to the series’ cancellation. The ECV2 honed the original concept with reworked aerodynamics, signaling Lancia’s stubborn refusal to quit innovating even when the playground was closed.

2. Toyota 222D

Toyota kept this mid-engined secret weapon so quiet that only spy photographs leaked before Group S collapsed.

The Toyota 222D produced around 600 hp from its mid-mounted 503E 2.1–2.2 L turbocharged inline-four engine. While loosely based on the MR2 (AW11), only the central passenger cell carried over; Toyota Team Europe engineered a bespoke space-frame chassis with carbon-Kevlar body panels. Configurable for all-wheel or rear-wheel drive, the 222D offered crucial adaptability.

Weighing an estimated 750–1000 kg depending on specification, its power-to-weight ratio promised savage acceleration. Only two or three prototypes survived Group S’s cancellation. Most were scrapped due to Japanese tax rules, leaving behind one of rally’s greatest “what ifs.”

3. Ford RS200S (John Wheeler’s Group S concept)

John Wheeler’s spare-time passion project became the Group S car that Ford never officially built.

A singular vision can defy an entire racing class’s cancellation. John Wheeler proved this, forging his one-off Group S-inspired Ford RS200 after both Group B and Group S were cancelled. He swapped the factory 1.8 L BDT for a formidable 2.0 L Cosworth YB/YBB inline-four and a modern BorgWarner turbocharger.

The upper framework integrated directly with the roll cage, creating a fortress of rigidity ready for any rally punishment. Extensive plastic, Kevlar, and carbon fiber bodywork saved around 100 kg from the standard car, greatly enhancing agility. The suspension upgraded to twin dampers at all four corners, ensuring tenacious grip on any surface. Wheeler’s car also used a six-speed sequential gearbox. While a unique one-off, its legend lives on through whispers of a limited production run for retro rally fans.

4. Škoda 130 LR / 130 LR Evo

Eastern Bloc engineering answered Group B’s turbo madness with a rear-engined featherweight that could dance on gravel.

While Group B rivals chased raw power, Škoda introduced the 130 LR in 1984–1985 with an emphasis on agility. This was the final Škoda works rally model to feature a rear-mounted engine, a distinct choice in a segment moving to mid-engined, AWD setups. The all-aluminium 1.3 L inline-four used two twin-choke Weber DCOE carburetors to generate 130–136 hp.

Combined with an exceptionally low curb weight of 730–820 kg from aluminium panels, that modest output delivered surprising pace and a top speed around 220 km/h. The car retained rear-wheel drive and a five-speed gearbox with self-locking differential. The planned 130 LR Evo featured a revised spoiler and ducts aimed at Group S requirements, but the category’s cancellation left its potential unrealized.

5. Audi Quattro RS001 / RS002

Roland Gumpert’s secret mid-engined experiment got destroyed by angry Audi management; the RS002 that followed became the Group S car they couldn’t hide.

The front-heavy Quattro rally cars, despite revolutionary all-wheel drive, faced inherent handling limitations on twisty stages. This drove Audi Sport boss Roland Gumpert to explore a different path, resulting in the clandestine RS001 prototype from 1984–1985. The car retained the angular aesthetic of the Sport Quattro but dramatically relocated its 2.1 L turbocharged inline-five engine behind the driver.

Legendary driver Walter Röhrl secretly tested the RS001 on gravel in then-Czechoslovakia, praising its superior agility. Spy photographs leaked to the press, angering Audi management and leading to the prototype’s confiscation and destruction. From this experimental groundwork emerged the RS002, a purpose-built Group S prototype from 1986. Its body was a lightweight plastic and composite shell over a short tubular steel spaceframe.

Power from the familiar 2.1 L turbocharged inline-five ranged from 500 hp to an explosive 700–800 hp at full boost, all delivered through Audi’s Quattro system to a tiny 2.2 m wheelbase designed for ultimate agility. Weighing around 1000 kg, the car never competed due to Group S’s cancellation. The sole surviving RS002 in the Audi Museum Mobile at Ingolstadt stands as a stark reminder of what could have been.

6. Mazda RX-7 Group B

Mazda’s naturally aspirated rotary scream proved rear-drive could still podium against turbo all-wheel-drive monsters.

The naturally aspirated 13B twin-rotor Wankel engine, a 1.3 L marvel, cranked out around 300 hp at 8000–8500 rpm, defying the era’s turbo-AWD orthodoxy. While rivals exploited all-wheel drive and forced induction for traction, Mazda committed to rear-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated rotary that could scream up to 10,000 rpm.

Engineers shifted the engine approximately four inches rearward on the first-generation FB-series RX-7 chassis to improve weight distribution. The engine used peripheral intake ports, dry-sump lubrication and Weber 51 IDA carburetion. Race-ready weight was roughly 990–1100 kg depending on spec. This unique approach paid off at the 1985 Acropolis Rally, where Ingvar Carlsson wrestled his RX-7 to an impressive 3rd place overall.

Despite this success, Mazda later explored prototypes featuring four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering for Group S, though surviving cars show minimal development levels due to the category’s cancellation.

7. Lada Samara EVA / Samara S Proto

Soviet engineers in Vilnius proved that genuine Group B ambition could emerge from the Eastern Bloc with a dual-winged turbocharged prototype.

Under rally driver and engineer Stasys Brundza, the Vilnius sports-car plant VFTS (later renamed EVA) crafted a machine defying typical Soviet expectations. Engineers built a tubular spaceframe chassis and cloaked it in a fiberglass body with a distinct double rear wing, giving it the aggressive stance of a Group B monster.

Power came from a mid-mounted 1.86 L DOHC 16-valve turbocharged inline-four engine derived from a Zhiguli/Lada base, initially pushing 270–300 hp. Later versions reportedly reached 350 hp, all delivered to the rear wheels via a five-speed gearbox. Despite keeping weight just under 1000 kg, the car retained much of the standard Ibiza steel body for cost reasons, though fiberglass replaced the bonnet, rear hatch and arch extensions.

Estimates suggest 20 to 30 prototypes were built in both turbo and non-turbo forms. After Group B’s ban, VFTS reoriented the concept into the more powerful Samara S Proto for Group S, though only one S Proto conversion is generally reported. Several EVA/S Proto cars survive, including examples in Brundza’s museum in Lithuania.

8. Opel Kadett 4S / Kadett Rallye 4×4

Opel hid a Ford-Zakspeed turbo engine in early prototypes before fielding the Kadett 4×4 at the 1986 Paris-Dakar.

Weighing in at a mere 960–980 kg, the Opel Kadett 4S was no ordinary hatchback. Engineers built it on a tubular or heavily reinforced chassis, cladding almost every external panel with lightweight Kevlar and composite, leaving only the roof. Early prototypes even tucked a secret 1.7 L turbocharged inline-four from Ford/Zakspeed under the skin, reportedly pushing 500 hp.

Later and Dakar-spec cars reverted to Opel’s own 2.4 L naturally aspirated four-cylinder from the Manta/Ascona 400, sometimes with supercharging or turbocharging in test configurations. In total, four Kadett 4×4/4S cars were produced, each with slightly different powertrain specifications.

Two cars entered the 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally using the 2.4-L engine and Xtrac AWD transmission. Despite battling relentless suspension issues, they finished around 37th and 40th overall, providing durability data rather than headline results. One Kadett 4S also appeared at the Audi Sport Rally in Britain as a Group S test, but the project was soon abandoned.

9. Peugeot 405 Turbo 16 / 405 T16 Pikes Peak & Dakar

Ari Vatanen’s 1988 Pikes Peak run in the 405 T16 became rally’s most iconic film short—then the car went on to dominate Dakar.

Peugeot’s ambition after Group B dominance led to the 405 Turbo 16, a machine designed for the extremes of hill climbs and rally raids. While loosely based on the 405 saloon and originally envisaged in Group S planning, this was no showroom car. Power came from a mid-mounted 1.9 L turbocharged DOHC inline-four (XU9T) engine, churning out 600–660 hp in Pikes Peak trim.

The body combined carbon fiber and Kevlar over a lightweight chassis featuring an aluminium central cell with tubular steel structures. The car featured four-wheel steering, a rarity in rally/hillclimb machines at the time, with a generous 2888 mm wheelbase for stability. Finnish legend Ari Vatanen used a 405 T16 to set a record at the 1988 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, climbing the course in 10:47.220.

That run was immortalized in Jean Louis Mourey’s short film Climb Dance. After conquering the clouds, the rally-raid version (often referred to as 405 T16 Grand Raid) went on to clinch overall victories at the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1989 and 1990, continuing Peugeot’s dominance after its Group B success.

10. SEAT Ibiza Bimotor

Two engines, two gearboxes, two clutches—because synchronizing one powertrain was apparently too simple for Spanish rally engineers.

Group S regulations in the 1980s fostered radical concepts, and the SEAT Ibiza Bimotor stands as proof of that wild ambition. Based on the first-generation Ibiza Mk1, this prototype adopted an all-wheel-drive setup by installing two separate 1.5 L “System Porsche” inline-four engines. Each unit, heavily modified with higher compression, revised camshaft and dual carburetors, delivered 125–130+ hp. Combined output reached 250–280+ hp (some factory retrospective sources quote “almost 300 PS“).

Curb weight stayed just under 1000–1001 kg. The two engines were mounted transversely front and rear, each with its own five-speed gearbox and clutch, allowing front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations depending on how the drivetrains were coupled. Synchronizing the two powertrains was mechanically complex; reports indicate the front engine tended to rev higher than the rear, demanding careful setup.

SEAT built two Bimotor cars, one initially developed and driven by José María Serviá and another by Toni Rius. They competed mainly in the Spanish Gravel Rally Championship, achieving multiple victories and runner-up positions in 1986–1988. Intended in spirit for Group B/Group S experimentation rather than full WRC homologation, the Bimotor remains one of the most unusual rally cars of the 1980s.

11. Lancia Delta HF 4WD

When Group S collapsed, Lancia’s Delta HF 4WD stepped up to Group A and promptly dominated rally for six straight years.

The abrupt cancellation of Group S regulations after 1986 forced rally teams to pivot completely. Into this void roared the Lancia Delta HF 4WD, introduced that same year as a high-performance, permanent-all-wheel-drive version of the Delta hatchback. The car used a 2.0 L turbocharged inline-four derived from the Lancia Thema, delivering around 165 hp in road-going form.

Permanent 4WD via three differentials offered tenacious grip, with torque split biased approximately 56% front / 44% rear. Presented in spring 1986 and homologated for the 1987 World Rally Championship, it became the core of Lancia’s Group A program, forming the basis for the Delta HF Integrale evolutions.

Lancia, with the Delta HF 4WD and its successors, secured an unparalleled six straight manufacturers’ titles between 1987 and 1992, establishing the marque as the dominant force of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
